Modular Madness Progress

Adding words to art :-O

So we had to pick a quote out of the quotes we had chosen before. The quote I picked was "If at first you don't succeed, order pizza."

We had to print out the quote in different sizes and incorporate it into some of our drawings.

I wanna go to a carnival now!

We had to make a mark making device. I thought about something that would be very efficient and make some awesome marks so I went ahead and made a swing type device. The pictures below show some of it in action and one picture during assembly.

Is that what I think it is??! TURTLE!

So this is how my texture project turned out.  It has evolved sooo much into something that I can actually call art.

Final Critique

I got overall good critique on this project like "You've done good." but they did point out a couple things to me that I was able to write down. One such thing is that the text background gives continuance to the piece. It makes you move through and look at the whole thing. It runs you back and forth from the border back into the dots. They told me it shows closure definitely. "It looks like a turtle in a box!" I was told that with the bold shiny dots and the bold shiny border that the text does kind of fall into the background and is not as prominent as it could be. The negative feedback I got for the mints being in the container is that they just wanted to eat them and couldn't. They did like how the mints were round and continued the feel of the circles inside the square.

When they looked at my other textures they told me that I def. chose the right texture for this composition. The radial manner of the texture draws you into the circles. Some critique I received for my other textures was that some of them were similar although I had spaced them out well in the book that it was hard to really tell unless you looked really close. The overall craft of the book and textures was good they said but there were a couple spots that could be touched up and smoothed out. There was one top edge that really bugged some of the group members because the rest of the edges were so cleanly cut.

What are you BUILDING?!?

This was the first outcome of my attempts at the 3d. I did end up adding an inch black border on each side. But then I was told it looked too plain and there wasn't enough variation in heights. So I raised the border! I also worked out an idea for changing up the heights a bit!

8 Text As Textures!

These are my 8 text as textures. I used different techniques for all of them. My group helped me out with ideas on what to do with them and so did my family.

Final 2 Playful / Periodic and Critique

These are my final 2 compositions! I chose this playful composition on the left because I love the story it tells. The story and tension overpowered my other choice in my mind. I chose this periodic on the right because it just felt more... periodic... different periods in time, space, and different periods in the composition.

Critique
The critique on these were helpful. I got hints that the craft could be improved a little and to change up the size of the squares a little more as they seemed too similar. On some of the squares edges I got out of the lines a bit that I didn't originally notice. On the periodic square I was also told that they thought I should have made negative space on the sides of the squares to match the negative space on the top and bottom. I did have good news though. They could tell right away which composition was which and they had seen much worse craft. They had also said that the movement of the boxes falling in the playful composition was very well displayed. Then they also said though that they think the smaller squares in the playful composition might have looked better if they had no negative space under them.

8 Playful / Periodic Squares

I just remembered I hadn't posted these yet. So am doing it a little out of order. These are my 8 playful / periodic squares compositions.

I'm going to number them left to right, first row then second row, 1-8 for purposes of explaining my top 4.

I had to choose a top 4 and then narrow it down to 2 after that. The top 4 I chose were numbers 1, 3, 6, and 7.

Self Critique
My craft on these 8 could have been better measured and I was not the happiest about that. I chose number 1 because in my opinion you can't get much more periodic than that. It is straight up a black and white half & half. The squares are embedded into each other and build up to make the half black. I chose number 3 because when I look at that I just want to laugh and be happy. That is very playful. Who doesn't love funny square faces? I chose number 6 because it creates a very playful story and tension. It's like the little square was being bullied at school and comes up behind the big square and pushes bigger squares onto him that will surely squish him! I chose number 7 because I liked the way it was periodic. It reminds me of different periods in someones life and also different areas of ones life.

Overall I was happy with my top four that I chose.

10 Pencil (Some Ink) Compositions Done In Class

 Above Left
Dipped a pencil in ink to bring out the hitting of the sound and dragged out of it from a center point and twirled the paper after every stroke.

Above Right
Poured an amount of Acrylic Paint onto the center of the page and then took a grass-like object and dragged from the center out during the music. I was testing a more focal point objective above.

 Above Left
Held multiple pencils in one hand and flowed when the flute was playing in the song.

Above Right
A harder song was playing so short definite strokes coming from a focal point was what I felt in that song... with my eyes closed.

 Above Left
The song playing seemed very pulse-like, kind of like a heart monitor or lie detector. So I grabbed a couple pencils and focused on that aspect.

Above Right
I folded the paper a number of times then using both hands, started from a focal point and went up and away from me.

Above Left
I set down the roll of tape on my paper and let a pencil bounce around inside with the music.

Above Right
I placed some pieces of tape under my paper and created a contrast to them by stroking the opposite way that they were going.

Above Left
I placed tape from the corners of my paper creating an X and then held my whole lot of pencils and did the stirring motion.

Above Right
I held a few pencils in that stirring motion but didn't stir. I just like twisted my wrist to create a more slashing feel.

16 Ink & Paint

Above Left
Comp. was crinkled and smoothed out. Then used various weighted tools during a song an switched around to create different weighted ink.

Above Right
Used a screw and dipped it in ink and then just dropped and spun it on different areas of the page.

 Above Left
Used a brush and drew over 100 lines across the center of the page.

Above Right
Used a small sponge brush and started at the same point and dotted outwards.

Above Left
Slid some weird object across the page with the beat of the music.

Above Right
Focused on the lower half of the page and used my opposite hand to brush with a grass like tool.

 Above Left
Dropped ink onto the page and blew it and splattered it during the chorus.

Above Right
Crinkled and smoothed page and used a small sponge-like object to flow with the smooth and easy song.

 Above Left
Used a straw to blow ink onto the center of the page with force and held it upright sometimes.

Above Right
Rolled a small round sponge brush across the page having it taped down at an angle.

 Above Left
Crinkled and smoothed paper then used a cap to a drink to dip in ink and twist as I touched it to page with different force.

Above Right
Spotted the page with one of those pointy square like spongy brushes that you use in painting.

 Above Left
Used a different sized cap (I think spray paint can?) and focused more on the center of the page to a more casual slow song adding organization because the song was slow and not chaotic.

Above Right
Used various tools to create different looks and a kind of chaotic, strange feel. It gives me a feeling of "Being Different" because its not CRAZY chaotic.. its just easy going, and different.

Above Left
Focused on half the page and used paint so it wouldn't dry as quick and then when the song finished I folded the page and mashed it together to create symmetry.

Above Right
Crinkled and smoothed page then attacked it with quick light strokes. I think maybe I used a square sponge brush.
